This painted mural installed at Bolton Woods Community Centre March 2007.
Groundwork Leeds made improvements to the adjacent playground and commissioned me to work with a group of children aged between 5 and 15, at the centre to produce designs on a ‘Jungle’ theme. The children, parents and volunteers helped paint the designs onto exterior panels which were then fixed onto a gable wall. The overall size is 32’ wide x 16’ high.
Kirkgate Studios and Workshops were contracted by Bradford and Airedale Primary Care Trust to produce artwork for the new Thornbury Medical Centre. They employed artist Vic Buta to work with local community groups to generate designs and artwork for the project. Developing from an initial theme of optical illusions, colour blindness test cards were used as a model and a circular format was used throughout in producing the artwork.
Five circular artworks were produced, each 1 metre in diameter. Each piece relates to one of the five senses: sight, sound, taste, touch and smell. Three are paintings on canvas, the other two are plaster reliefs.
Students from Laisterdyke Business and Enterprise College worked on the artwork relating to ‘Sight’, ‘Sound’ and ‘Touch’. Participants from Mortimer House Children’s Centre produced artwork for the pieces relating to the senses ‘Taste’ and ‘Smell’.
The finished artwork was installed in the Medical Centre in early October 2007.
I worked with over 100 participants aged 2 to 72, from a variety of community groups supported by Shipley Hale – a project promoting healthy lifestyles. Individuals produced designs reflecting their involvement with Hale. Each made a printing block and produced prints that were reproduced and integrated with the Hale logo. The finished piece was installed at Kirkgate Community Centre, Shipley. The artwork was commissioned through Kirkgate Studios and Workshops. Participating groups were: ‘Dirty Diggers’ allotment group, ‘Leaving Care’, ‘Time 4 Me’, 123 Group, Frizinghall Parents Group, Doodles Parent and Child Group.

Kirkgate Studios and Workshops commissioned Rachel Johnson and myself to work on this project
The ‘Manningham Lift” ceramic mural was purpose-made for the newly built Westbourne Green Medical Centre in Manningham, Bradford. Designs based on body cells were produced during workshops with 120 children from three local schools: Lilycroft Primary; Green Lane and Challenge College. Black lines abstracted from doctors’ signatures were added to the designs which were then were transferred onto unglazed tiles. The children also produced hand-made tiles that were inserted into the regular tiles in cell-like shapes. The glazing, firing and installation were completed with the help of volunteers from KS&W. The mural was installed in 2006 in 3 sections: a 16m x 1m section in a connecting internal ‘street’ and 2 further sections measuring 4m x 1m and 3m x 1m in the main reception area.
I worked with parents, toddlers, staff and volunteers at this nursery based at the William Gascoyne Youth Centre, in Middleton, Leeds.
Workshops were held in the summer holidays so older brothers and sisters were able to help too. Designs were produced on what developed into a sort of ‘Community and Beyond’ theme. The mural comprises 2 panels. The left hand panel shows a hillside with houses and people; the right hand panel shows a planet and its inhabitants. The rockets, arranged in a connecting arc, form a link between the two.
The mural was installed in September 2008. The project was commissioned by Groundwork Leeds who also did landscaping work to provide a new playground.
Made from chicken wire stuffed with soft toys, this Troll was made with help from participants from the Justart and Youthart projects. It was installed on the canal bridge in Saltaire for the Saltaire Festival 2008.
